Month 1
I call him at work to tell him I “think” the tv is on fire……..he runs the 4 minute mile and he is home before I can even hang up the phone…………He totally cares………about me?………or the tv?………likely both
Month 2
Things in common………some totally opposite………..
Toilet seat down…………most of the time………………..
Family values, kindness, respect, thoughtful, fun……
Month 20
Me in pj’s the past 24 hours……..the darn flu………..he gets down on one knee to propose……..excited to share the ring he has designed for me………I think I said “yes”………too delirious from the flu to remember………
Month 30
We make it official and get married.
40 Years Later
It’s how he still looks at me with love and kindness when I enter the room
It’s how he accepts my flaws and loves me anyways
It’s how he makes me laugh
It’s how he gently holds and plays with the grandchildren
It’s how he drops everything to be present and help when his family needs him, always making loved ones a priority
Things in common………some totally opposite………..
Toilet seat down…………most of the time………………..
Family values, kindness, respect, thoughtful, fun……
He is still the same man I married……….. except that we have grown 40 years older together.
We are a team. We have learned when to step in or step back. We support each other.
Many pivotal events have occurred over the last 40 years. And yet, it’s the numerous little things that create the moments in our day, and ultimately create our life.
I am very aware of the passing of time and the fragility of life. Our days ahead will be less than the days we have left behind. The gift of time is very precious.
I am grateful for the 40 years we have had together. I will cherish the moments we have ahead of us.
Yes……. he is a keeper!
(Happy 40th Anniversary Sweetheart…….my Partner, my Friend…….I love you with all of my heart)
What a beautiful post, Erica. Your husband definitely sounds like a ‘keeper’ (and I already know he would say the same thing about you). Happy Anniversary…I hope that the rain holds off a bit so you can get out and enjoy your special day!

Somehow in that tellers line-up of eligible bachelorettes you stood head and shoulders apart. I kept asking my co-workers what’s that beautiful one’s name. No, the one with that smile and radiant personality. No, that one on the left. Yes, she’s the one.
In 1978 we got married in Whitehorse in the living room of the rented house with the mandatory two witnesses, the preacher and his wife. No relatives, no pomp, no pressure. Just love.
Fast forward forty years later. I am so lucky you said yes. To me YOU are still the most beautiful women, mother and grandmother. You never cease to amaze me. Your blog brought tears to my eyes. Mission accomplished. Thank God it’s raining.
Now, more than ever, it’s obvious that there’s no questioning my taste in women. However, I still have to wonder about your taste in men.
Forty Years! A milestone. We considered renewing our vows…. NO…. Just the two of us. No pressure. Just love. Besides I don’t want to give you an out. JK.
I was and I still am committed ’til death do we part. LUL.
On the Paul Harvey side of the story: Now YOU know why I chose her.

HI Erica,
I found you through Retirement Reflections…this is such a lovely post and tribute.
I hope you had a joyous celebration of your 40 years together…but as you said it is not the momentous events but the every day ones that bring us and keep us close.
My husband and I are now exploring our retirement – our third age if you will. Not sure what this adventure will bring but we are in it together. Thank goodness for good partners.
Looking forward to reading more!

Congratulations Erica! 40 is an amazing number indeed!! It’s wonderful to find someone to partner and grow with. My parents just celebrated 42 years and my husband and I will celebrate 20 years in April.
