We All Do It.

When we have toddlers in our life, we talk about it….. often.

When we get older, we visit it….. often.

When we take photos of everything, we have many pictures of it.

I am talking about the loo, the lavatory, the privy, the throne room.

I have been sitting on this story for almost a year.

My post is an excuse to share a few fun photos from some of the bathrooms I have visited over the last few years. 

The photos put a smile on my face.  I hope they put a smile on yours.

I Almost Peed Myself Laughing.

Janis, from Retirementally Challenged   shared an exceptionally funny and witty post on her blog  Sitting on the Deck of Bidet*   For the sensitive folk still reading here, I caution you.  Janis discusses “nether regions,” and “derrieres.”  

I shared with Janis how our house in Nanaimo had a bidet in the ensuite bathroom and a laundry chute.  When friends and family came over to visit the first thing they wanted to see was the bidet.  Then they would throw something down the laundry chute.  Janis brought up a good point. “As long as your guests didn’t get the bidet and laundry chute mixed up.”

April Fool’s Day.

I decided April Fool’s Day was a perfect day to make a fool of myself and share some silly and fun photos.

Every day is a perfect day to take care of our mental health.

Yes, life is exceptionally challenging and serious right now.

If laughter is the best medicine, then I choose to distract myself, even temporarily, with something that makes me smile.

I hope it makes you smile, too.

  1. True story My father came from the village of Kelston near Bath. Its main (only) claim to fame is as the home of the first ever flush toilet invented by Mr. Crapper.

    1. During one of my trips to Barbados, I toured a sugar cane plantation. In one of the bathrooms was an original Crapper toilet (still working!). Of course, I had to take a picture of it!

    2. This is hilarious, Anne. I did not know there was an actual “Mr. Crapper.” Does this make you somewhat famous by association? I now have a new topic and all of this interesting information to discuss with my husband while we are in solitary confinement (oops, I mean, social isolating) Thank you for sharing.🙂

    1. I wondered whether Iceland was still a possibility for you this year, Natalie. Like you say, unfortunately it will be postponed along with your other trips. 😟 The Laundromat Cafe was closed for a short period of time in 2018 and then reopened. A very interesting and fun place. Many unique, fun places in Reykjavik and throughout Iceland.🙂

    1. Ironically, this was part of our recent conversation. I had mentioned to Janis last year that I was ‘sitting on’ a post about bathrooms. I had seen ‘Thursday Doors’ making it’s way around the blogging community. What about Bathrooms? Since the beginning of January I have been planning to share on April Fool’s Day. Then our planet did a 180. I debated and then like you say “just what the doctor ordered.” Thank you, Deb.

  4. I have IBS so I am well acquainted with potties everywhere. I was at an open air concert in a local park. Although I avoided eating, I still had to go. Park facilities are not ideal. They rank below pizza place facilities. However, this one was clean, relatively odorless (for an outdoor facility) and stainless steel. It flushed and there was a basin to wash hands with real soap. I was so impressed that I talked about it for weeks. When I was in Greece many decades ago, there were the potties where you stood in cement footprints and aimed at a hole and some where everything flushed automatically (it was the first place I saw that). The two were a block apart. You can guess which one I used.

    1. It is funny how bathrooms stay in our memories, good and bad. I did have a few photos I decided not to share. You are welcome. We were a group of 4 in Iceland, me, husband, my daughter, my friend. We stopped when my daughter and friend went for an urgent break. They both returned with a big grin, deciding ‘they no longer had to go.’ I have heard about the cement footprints one, Kate. I am glad you had a choice.🙂

I’ve never see so many interesting designs. 🙂 The sign that reads “Toilets are flushed when hands are washed” might be showing up all over the world.     In February, we were doing some home renovations, and I ordered a fun, vintage-type sign for our laundryroom.
    Ever since that purchase, I have received multiple email suggestions of other fun signs that I could purchase. The most notable, is this one: “Great Experience. Would Poop Here again.   9. What a fun post. I like the cement filled tires holding down the port-a-potties. That’s ingenious and much appreciated I’d think. I don’t have a thing to add to this post in the way of April Fool’s Day tomfoolery. Truth be known this is my least favorite holiday of them all, so being safe at home works for me.

    1. Ally, I began researching April Fool’s Day and there is actually a great deal of history surrounding this day. I wasn’t in the mood to write about it and too much information to summarize. April Fool’s Day is a special day in our family since it is my brother’s birthday.

      It was exceptionally windy where the porta pottys were located, in the middle of nowhere. I greatly appreciated not falling over in them, or worse, flying away in them.

  11. A lot of special places in Iceland are in remote locations without permanent facilities. You know how popular the attraction is based on the level of the port-a-potty. Erica/Erika chose not to display the pictures showing why they returned “unsatisfied”. You are such a nice person. Yes, I took pictures. Lets say they are not for the feint of heart…..enough to make a maggot gag. Even I couldn’t go!

    1. I needed a break from all of the challenging news and I had this file of bathroom photos. There was some discussion last week on whether it is appropriate to post light, frivolous topics right now. I enjoy a diversion and reading about some new topics, such as the unique, hilarious birthday cards and letters surfacing when we go through our files. 🙂 We may be in solitary confinement (oops, social isolation) for quite awhile and I want to find some enjoyment in each day.   13. That’s something I have never thought to photograph for my gallivanting posts! I have encountered some horrific toilets in the past, plenty of squatties of varying degrees of cleanliness (usually at the negative end of the scale). I’m not sure I could use one now as I doubt I could stand up without putting my hand on the ground – eurgh! The worst ever was at a park in China where I walked behind a curtain to discover one, long trench (then found the far more acceptable tourist toilets too late).

    1. I know I have come across some amazing, unique bathrooms over the years. I did not always have a camera handy. Now, with an iPhone, I would take more photos. Of course, now, we are not going anywhere, so no unique photos.

  15. Popping in to say hello. Who couldn’t use some good ol’ fashioned whimsy and humor these days? This post brings to mind a memory of my sister sending me a photo of the brightly colored women’s restroom in the San Francisco museum of modern art. The doors were bright and shiny deep deep red. The restroom had a real 50s look to it. Why did she send me that photo? Because that was the most interesting thing she had seen in the museum where every wall was adorned with gobs, splashes, ink spots, and blank canvases.

    Just recently my daughter shared that her six year old son had a problem in the restroom and ended up dropping a whole roll of TP into the toliet and of course the toilet got stopped up and it overflowed. My intrepid daughter had to reach down and pull that roll of TP out. Of course as we know, TP is like gold these days, even those this whole role was now useless. What I wanted to know is (cuz little guy had to go #2): did you pull out the toliet roll AFTER the brown stuff had gone down?? HA HA HA. My daughter answered yes, thank God.

    Okay that’s all I have. No April 1st prank story. Just two stories related to restrooms.

    Wonderful post to read today. Now it’s about 2:30pm here in SoCal and getting ready to sit on my back patio and get some healthy rays of luscious sunshine.

I have seen some amazing bathrooms over the years, although I did not always have a camera with me. Very funny and real on some of the TP and toilet shenanigans with children. What we do for the love of our children.🙂

      1. E/E: why is it that young children have a fascination with bathrooms? Every where I took my grand children they always had excuses to go to the bathroom. They were incessantly fascinated with bathrooms! And I don’t think it is just my grand children either!
        I think my daughter may have pulled that scam too when she was young 😂

  18. I can so relate to how much one discusses this issue with little ones around! This definitely put a smile on my face.

    The rocket trash can was kinda neat and would be great for an astronomy buff or aerospace buff.

    I enjoyed Bidets in France but never seriously considered installing one in the bathroom at home until now! When this virus passes and we’re back to normal I’m hiring an electrician to install the outlet and we’re buying one!
    At this point, it’s not a luxury!

  19. First off I had to laugh when you mentioned the loo and then said – I have been sitting on this story for almost a year. I instantly saw you sitting on the loo pondering 🙂 Speaking of bidets, I recently read an article that said most of Europe as well as Asian countries think we Americans are nasty because the majority of us in the US don’t have a bidet. Will check out Janis’ post. I’ve seen funny memes and videos and although this isn’t a laughing matter and you have to be safe and protect yourself, I truly believe that laughter is the best medicine! No, laughter will not cure COVID-19 but it sure makes these recent days and weeks more pleasant and manageable, huh? I just found a link party for humor too!

At work we have auto flush, auto sinks, etc. Sometimes when I get home (before I started working from home), I would wave my hands under the faucet and be momentarily confused when no water came out!     1. Thank you, Pamela. A few other bloggers were discussing whether it is appropriate to post something light and frivolous. I did what I usually do and listened to my gut. April 1st is also a special day in our family, a day to be celebrated. My brother’s birthday. It was also fun to remember some of the places we visited. My gut, also……..no right or wrong and no rules, whatever moves you or brings you joy.

      I just finished reading (again, since I read many in bed at unusual hours) your last two posts and they really hit home! I have all of my friends in spirit practising beside me on my yoga mat each day. You are one of them Pamela. Yes, a less weighty space. 💕

  22. I’ve never taken a picture of a bathroom. Ha ha. What a fun pastime for the right moment. 🙂 We had an outhouse for most of my childhood in Vermont, a spider-webby cubicle with a hole in the plywood bench and a plastic seat. The funniest thing we did was keep a toilet brush and plunger in there – always a bit confusing for guests. Thanks for the laughs – always a good thing these days. 🙂

    1. Hi Diana, I have seen pictures of Vermont and it looks like an exceptionally beautiful area. You definitely made me smile on the toilet brush and plunger in the outhouse. It is interesting how children remember the spider webs. My daughters still talk about a place that was spider-webby when they were young.         1. I am usually a cup half full person, although, a few more challenges lately. It is more the worry of where this is going and how it affects my family. I do feel very grateful for all in my life. I have mentioned on some of the comments how a phrase/mantra is close to my heart, recently, (I think many of us have a few mantras on the go right now) ‘Don’t put life on hold.   23. Fun post!! I used to take photos of all the faculty bathrooms at the school where I subbed. It was interesting to see the differences. Some bathrooms were really decked out with all the supplies, little tables, bottles of lotion, soft lighting, Christmas decorations. Others barely had the little squares of toilet paper like the kids use in the student bathrooms. Usually, the faculty at the schools where things in the potties were pretty, the morale was good and the campus was well run.

  24. This was a great post, Erica! We all need some daily humor! Our most interesting bathroom excursion was in Amsterdam. The ladies’ restroom had see-through bathroom stall doors that darkened upon locking. I locked mine, and it grew opaque, but I could still see out. I wondered if it was like two-way mirrors. I most definitely did not want to be on display and didn’t really want to stare at people either. I tried locking it again and it had another click and fully darkened. Phew! I was glad that I hadn’t went with it half-locked. My husband and sons said that their restroom had a urinal that was something like a trough with a waterfall. There were also “interesting” urination spots for males in the Red Light District.

  25. Erica it is so fun to see this collection of photos and to read the text. In times like these we do need to find ways to laugh and stay light hearted when we can. The post made me think of the many strange bathrooms we have come across in our travels… usually the ones with half walls that therefore make the bathroom ie the toilet, literally in the bedroom. In fact in the lovely house we first stayed at in Viet Nam, the toilet was just around a wall next to the bed and we kept wondering why anyone would design their house to have their toilet literally in their bedroom!??

    On the more humorous side, we went into a public bathroom in Lisbon Portugal years back that had brightly colored toilet papers to choose from… Bright orange, purple, red, you name it. That really got us thinking about why on earth toilet paper is always boring white? And of course in Asia most places have a hose with a water spray instead of having toilet paper at all. A “bum gun” as it is affectionately known.

    2. I remember as a child in Canada, we had perfumed toilet paper with coloured patterns on it. They stopped making it because the perfume and dyes added chemicals to the water.

  26. Yes, this made me smile as well. Thank you, Erica, for the distraction. I’ve taken a few photos of toilets in the past, when they looked interesting or funny. As far as toilet experiences around the world, I have had many more gross than funny encounters, especially in China. 🙂

    I, too, enjoyed Janis’ latest post. My family never had bidets, but the house I grew up in had a laundry chute beginning at my parents’ bedroom and ending in the garage. I never thought anything about it, but when giving visitors a tour of the house – which rarely happened – the chute always stood out. Have a nice weekend!

It seemed to lock up efficiently and for a brief moment I did feel a little claustrophobic hoping it would also easily open. I also appreciate a smile. I feel our mental health is very important. Thank you for making me smile on the laundry chute and bidet potential mix up. We lived in that house for only one year and then we were transferred again. No bidet here, although I can see how that may change in the future. Take care and stay safe. We will stay connected. 🙂

I remember a trip to New Zealand and my husband always made a bee-line for the toilets as they often had great quotes, posters and interesting articles!   30. You are not alone in your ‘obsession’ with bathrooms. I kept a journal when we went on our very first family trip to Europe way too many years ago. I was endlessly fascinated with all the variations on the theme … and it showed up in my journal every. single. day. 🙄

    Your photo of the port-a-potty in Iceland being weighed down by cemented tires struck a chord with me. First, I remember how windy it was in Iceland, but mostly because I have this irrational fear of being tipped over while in a port-a-potty :/

    1. Joanne, I think the IPhone has helped with taking spontaneous photos, even quirky bathroom photos. Laurie from Meditations in Motion did mention she saw a porta potty tip over. Oh, great, something else to worry about.🙂 Although, I may not be visiting a porta potty for some time. Not that I ever enjoyed the visit.😉

  31. Ha! Thank you for the laugh today. Nice bathroom photo collection. I can see why you saved them for a special day!

    As a runner, I have frequently had to use porta-potties at races. Once, the wind was blowing so hard, a porta-potty tipped over on its side right after I exited it! Thank heavens it didn’t tip over while I was inside!

    1. Thank you, Laurie. April Fool’s Day is also my brother’s birthday, so I wanted to stay more light-hearted. Oh my goodness on the porta potty actually tipping over. Too funny and not funny. I wonder if the weight of someone in it helps prevent the tipping over. This will always stay in the back of my mind now. 🙂

  34. OMG Erica, this is too good! And a perfect pick-me-up…
    I’ve been preoccupied with COVID things; still in Florida, worried about my kids up north and my brother “the doc” at ground zero at the Javits Ctr in NYC.  Instead of blogging I’ve been sewing masks and distributing to the docs in our family, family members, friends and neighbors. We are REALLY self-isolating.  Groceries delivered, etc.  I have become the queen of germophobes.  LOL.  Don’t want this thing…rather wait for the vaccine, but that could be a while, I know.  May put a kink into our big RV trip.  We are just patiently waiting and playing things by ear. This is an odd part of history to be living through.  
    We plan to head back to NH probably around mid May.  We are in the process of selling the sailboat (sad 😦 ) and that should wrap up in early May. 
    Please keep in touch. I know I’ll get back to blogging, but am too antsy to sit and write just now.

Just walks in our neighbourhood. Yesterday morning I headed out 7am for groceries for the first time. Miss my family. Yet, counting our blessings.   36. Erica, the perfect post for these times! 😀 I too am taken with loos during my travels … from some super luxurious ones with baths and gold taps to a portoloo in France that self-cleaned the whole cubicle after every visitor and we were terrified of being trapped in there!

    What a great idea to revisit old photos and post ideas and get them published! I’ve had a couple of on hold for a year or two … see if I find the creative energy to write about them!

    1. Thank you, Annika. I am with you on not wanting to be trapped, especially after that door locks. I was really on the fence about posting a more light-hearted story during these challenging times. It is like you say, a great way to revisit old photos. I do like reading everyone else’s posts, serious and light-hearted and everything under the sun.☀️

      Abby and Sadie are well and they spend a great part of their day outdoors. My daughter and her family live in an area called Shawnigan Lake, about 40 minutes away.   39. Erica, so many funny pictures. This reminded me of a trip to Paris in 1978. I have many memories of that first trip to Europe, but the toilets in Paris really stand out. I saw my first bidet in our hotel room in Paris where it was right beside the bed, but strangely the toilet itself was in a shared bathroom down the hall. I encountered one of the horrible footpad with a hole in the floor types of toilets. And I understand why you didn’t include a photo. I remember that along the streets, there were places for men to pee — essentially two screens fastened at a right angle that a man would face into and pee into a drain. And the bathrooms in the train stations were presided over by elderly women who would sell you a few squares of toilet paper as you entered.

    1. Jude, You were very young visiting Paris for the first time. What fun! I have not heard about a bidet right beside the bed. I am hearing how more people in our neck of the woods are purchasing bidets. We were in Europe about fifteen years ago where we saw the footpad plus hole in the floor toilets in the Cinque Terre. We were lucky to find regular toilets after communicating with the locals. We did not have digital cameras for our Europe trip, or I would have many more bathroom photos.🙂 Purchasing a few squares of toilet paper definitely made me smile this morning. Thank you!
