The Reason

Deb  The Widow Badass Blog  was visiting The Island.  Donna Retirement Reflections Blog  plus Deb and I met at “The Old Town Bakery” in Ladysmith thanks to Donna’s recommendation.

I know only a few things about Ladysmith.

  • Pamela Anderson was born and raised here.
  • The Christmas Festival of Lights is a huge event.  
  • It is worth stopping at The Old Town Bakery, voted as having “The best cinnamon buns on the island.” 

The constant flow of people coming in and out of this bakery and my taste buds agree with all of the praise.

The Season

Autumn.

A beautiful, peaceful time of year with changing colours and cooler temperatures.

Perfect for going on a hike and exploring The Holland Creek Trail in Ladysmith.  Another great recommendation from Donna.  Donna shares more detailed information and beautiful photos here

That evening, at home, my husband asked me about my day and my new friends.

 Searching for words, I told him,  “Donna and Deb are More.”

  5. Loved this post!! Had already read Donna’s post about your all’s walk through Holland Creek Trail. It’s good to have certain friends to do different things with. For example, I have a friend who likes to go to the movies but here it is October and she absolutely will not go see any scary movies!! And we can’t forget our blogging friends. Then if we’re fortunate we’ll have some friends for a lifetime!!

  6. I actually read this post last night but my iPad wasn’t being cooperative enough to let me comment. So here I am back this morning.

    I loved the description of ‘more’. I get it. I haven’t yet had the chance to meet you and Donna, but ‘more’ definitely describes every outing I’ve had with Deb. hmmm – maybe she’s the common denominator 🙂

    Fall is such a gorgeous time of year and the photos of your walk together look like you captured it at its most beautiful.

    Friends truly are the icing on life’s cake 💕 (Shenanigans are optional 😉)

    1. Hi Joanne, You definitely came up in our conversation (in a good way:) We are excited about your visit! Lots to see and do around here. Donna found a Duncan Totem tour link. Something I have never done. I may check it out in the next few weeks.

      We have ideas/suggestions. You do a lot of research and you will be looking into specific activities and adventures that appeal to you. Let me know if I can help in any way.🙂

      We had a great day for a hike. Mostly cloudy, rainy and some sun. Better for taking pictures. Deb told us you had a word for this, I think “flat light.”

      1. Yes – I know ‘flat light’ very well. Some people are discouraged by mostly cloudy and rainy skies, but I’m glad the three of you didn’t interfere with your plans … although when you live on Vancouver Island I guess it becomes the norm at this time of year.
        I’m lucky that my one and only trip to Vancouver Island 20 years ago was in sunshine 🙂

        I too am really looking forward to my trip there. All the ideas you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Right now I don’t know what I don’t know.
        At some point, maybe in the spring, it will be easier to simply have a phone call – or several – to iron out some details 🙂 In the meantime I’m simply gathering possibilities. The truth is I’d probably need a month there to squeeze it all in 😏

        1. You have travelled a great deal, Joanne. You know you never really have the opportunity to see everything. It is often the unexpected surprises on a trip that add special meaning. Donna is a great resource, too. She is an amazing planner and researching! I am actually very curious about the Duncan Totem tour since I have not done this, yet. I may take 2 of my grandchildren (3 1/2 and 6) for a totem exploring adventure on the next Pro D day 🙂 We will definitely communicate more before next Summer.🙂

          1. I tend to waffle back and forth. Sometimes I just go with whatever the universe throws at me and other times I’ll research something extensively beforehand. There are pros and cons in both.

  7. When I saw bakery I thought “I have to move there!” Not that we don’t have bakeries here but your prose makes it all sound like so much fun. There are different friends and some are just transitory acquaintances. Some like to gossip, some like to “do” things and some are truly soul mates. I have one really long-term friend. We have lunch about every other month. We compare feelings and often are going through similar things. She’s someone I turn to for “real” advice.

  10. What a beautiful time you all had, Erica! And, I love the theme you built your blog post around.

    Living on the road can be very isolating. We sometimes meet like-minded people we might have a conversation or even a meal with, but then, we all go separate ways. In general, I have plenty of friends, but we communicate via email or blog comments. So, when we are back in Massachusetts, where some of my husband’s (and now my) friends live and where we stay with my in-laws, it is a treat to catch up with real-life friends. That’s what we did last night and it was a blast! I miss not having a girlfriend close by or being able to “pour my heart out” to anyone.

    1. Hi Liesbet, You make a good point on friendship. It helps if you have the opportunity to spend time together. It is different on the real-life friends. I knew I liked Donna and Deb before I met them. Then, I found I liked them even “more” when we spent time together. I agree on a girlfriend close by. It is very cathartic and therapeutic to be able to “pour your heart out” to a close friend. Everyone lives vicariously through your adventures, Liesbet. Yet, it is good to hear all sides of living your lifestyle. Glad you had fun last night. Thank you for sharing.🙂

Savoury items, fresh breads and buns, cookie bars, cinnamon buns, croissants…….is there drool on your device, yet? I heard different accents and different languages spoken when we were there. It seems to be a tourist destination, too. I was teasing Donna, that we would still be on that trail, chatting and taking pictures. We had to pick up the pace towards the end of our hike.   14. There is nothing quite like a carpet of fall leaves wet down from a recent rain. The only thing that could make it more special is being in the company of highly compatible new friends. What a beautiful walk, with amazing photographs that capture the spirit of the day. That one with Deb and Donna walking up the path is magazine worthy! You should share it with the park service or # their Instagram feed if they have one.

    My friends are pretty compartmentalized into tennis friends, book club friends, Mahjongg friends, photography club friends and close friends. My husband is my best friend (I know that sounds cliche’), but I still seek out and enjoy the prospective of a close female friend on some issues. More is the perfect word to describe how true friends contribute to our lives. Lovely post.

    1. You are right, Suzanne, on the highly compatible new friends. I took a lot of photos, (of course:) I really like how the carpet of leaves photo makes me feel. It captured the mood and the season. I usually use a Panasonic ZS70 although, I finally got a new phone a couple of weeks ago. Went from a 6 to a 10R iphone. The huge bonus, is it works much better on a low light, rainy day. I did not have to worry about the lens getting rain drops. I know you take a lot of amazing photos, Suzanne!

      Immediate tears sprang up when you called your husband your best friend. Not cliche, heartfelt. Thank you for sharing your thoughts💕

    1. We did have a fun time, Donna! Also fun to experiment with our cameras/phones. Your photos are gorgeous!! I have had my phone for only a couple of weeks and I made myself use it more on Thursday because of the rain. I also plan to get the Alltrail app. I may think about the offline maps.

      I greatly appreciate your research and recommendations, Donna. 🙂 It all turned out Better than and More. I don’t mind the driving. Worth it!! 💕

    1. Hi Joanne, It was pouring rain on the drive there and on the drive back. The weather improved on the actual hike with some rain, lots of clouds and sun occasionally peeking through the clouds. In some ways the area is quite sheltered because of the trees. We would have LOVED to have you join us, Joanne!!

  20. Hi Erica! First off, your photos are outstanding! I especially liked the one of Donna walking through the leaves. Just like Jill said, her coat reminds me of Paddington Bear. I love how you described different types of friendships and how much they impact our happiness and sense of well-being. When we get older, it can be difficult to make new friends. We don’t have school, or work, or young kids to act as a catalyst and provide us an easy way to meet others with common interests. I think that blogging does that, at least for me. I have met amazing women (you included) that I would have never met otherwise and we instantly have something in common.

    I am amazed at how beautiful the fall season looks on Vancouver Island. I think I’ll have to plan a trip up to see it in person at some point. We just don’t get those autumn colors around here. You really live in a lovely area. Oh, and that bakery… yummers!

      I agree with you. We often do not meet new people at this stage. It was very much a pleasant surprise to meet like-minded, interesting and very supportive bloggers (you included:)

      We could easily have walked a few more hours, talking and taking photos. Our calves, hips and knees may not have been as happy the next day.🙂

      The pictures turned out pretty good for the both of us (Deb will likely have her version and photos after she returns home). The irony is how we debated going on this walk, since it was raining. We are also on the tail end of Autumn here and most of the leaves have fallen from the trees. It would be wonderful if you and Paul could visit again!!

Hi Erica – my Word of the Year is “More” and used in the same way you’ve used it here – I love the idea of More of the good stuff in life and more of what makes us happy – and good friends definitely come close to the top of the list. I also love how bloggers have an instant affinity when we meet IRL – it’s like we’ve known each other for years. I’m not sure if it’s because we read about each other’s lives, or because we’re a certain personality type, or whatever – but it’s amazing and I’m yet to meet a blogger I didn’t like! I just wish I could warp distance so I could come over and meet all the Canadian bloggers – I think we’re all kindred spirits xx

I like the reason/season/life saying you mentioned and have been known to use it to explain the comings and goings of people in my life. As for new friends, they’re few and far between. This is not the friendliest part of the country, but that’s ok my old friends are great.

  25. I’ve come across this post just as I am searching for a friend. I have a lifetime friend who lives in another state and I rarely see. Had work friends but lost touch with them when I retired and they kept working. Have friends who are the wives of the men my husband plays baseball with. But I don’t have a more friend. I can tell that Donna is a precious soul just from meeting her and growing our virtual friendship. And having discovered your blog, I am feeling a connection with you, too. Have now added The Widow Badass to my Bloglovin’ feed.

    So glad you enjoyed this afternoon with friends. The pastries look like the cherry on top of the proverbial perfect day. Your photographs are stunning. I had forgotten trees really do turn the most beautiful colors. And that brook or stream, gurgling beside the trail. What a lovely place to walk and get to know one another.

I just had a milestone birthday and discovered most of my friends have been kicking around for 20-30 years, though I have a few in the 7+ year group too….and yes, I have my go tos for catch ups at the theatre, dancing and kookier activities.   32. Okay, Erica, these photos are stunning! The area is beautiful, obviously, but also the way your were able to capture the beauty is pretty impressive. Thank you for sharing them. I was also touched by your story of friends who are More. That’s what we all need more of in this life. My dearest friend passed away unexpectedly just one year ago, and I feel the loss keenly. Luckily, I have siblings who are close and now some blogging friends that I hope to meet IRL at some point. In a few years, when I retire, we plan to travel more, and I may just come calling! 🙂

    Joan my forever friend aged 89 years is currently in a nursing home.
    I am going to reblog a post devoted to joan as her daughter notified me today of her deteriorating health.

    I see that I have already reblogged this post and as far as I know a post can only be reblogged once.
    Enjoy your special time with your friend.
    Aren’t friendships interesting. Just over two years ago I resumed contact with a primary school friend via her mother in law. Our paths separated aged 11 years when we went to different schools.
    After all these years my ‘best friend’ is still as special & bubbly.
    I recently met an ex colleague & friend but I felt that sparkle between us had gone.
    Joan was an ex colleague, friend, mentor & surrogate mother whose sparkle never dimmed.

Yes, we do have many friends for many different reasons and seasons, and we are indeed fortunate to have some friends for a lifetime.

    I learned of your gettogether with Donna and WBA over at Deb’s blog. What another great opportunity.
    You know what I think of my blogging friends. I’ve met none of you IRL, but I consider you all great friends all the same.
    A friend is someone you share yourself with…and I’ve done more sharing of myself in my blog and to you all than to many folks I’ve known my whole life.
    Still, I look forward to the time when we can actually get together in person and it is so lovely that you have been able to do so already. And I’ve just a little envious. But I know that my opportunity will come.
    The photos of the hike look lovely. We’ve left NH and the foliage for sunny FL, but I’m not sorry. It’s lovely (and warm!) here, too.

    1. I totally get it on sharing more of ourselves on our blogs, Nancy. This is why it feels so natural and special to connect IRL. I look forward to reading more about sunny FL. Part of the extra fun of the blogosphere is we are all part of this small planet. Some of us are wearing a few more layers of clothing and boots now than others 🙂

        1. I love when you tell me anything unusual you see on my site, Yvette! I am constantly learning and I may be unaware of anything looking suspicious or how things may appear to the reader. I will investigate my settings to make sure I approve comments with “one link.” I have not worked with “moderating” my site, as I see on a few blogs.           1. oh my pleasure and I am still learning these little things too (but I have that one down – hahah)
            and I was setting up a different blog and was so frustrated because I could not figure out how to turn off likes (I want it to be more professional and “likes” are too informal) and Google rescued me – within in minutes I found to go to “sharing” and got it from there – but o my goodness – ahhh a
            and thanks for letting me know – hope your week is off to a nice start

  45. Hi / enjoyed this post and the different type of friends you describe! Ahhh – so true! And the different seasons …
    Also / loved the different photos you chose to share… can feel the fun and the trees and green show the beauty of setting –
    And just today I had lunch with a friend – the first friend I made in Virginia when we moved here in ’03-
    We only get together once or twice a year…

  46. Erica, I was sorry to miss this meet up with you, Donna, and Deb, but I had my grandkids staying with me for a week at that time. Your photos are fabulous! And I am happy to report that I have finally visited the Old Town Bakery in Ladysmith.

    1. Hi Jude, Family and Life always comes first. We watch two of our grandchildren on Mondays and Tuesdays (1 1/2 and 3 1/2) and we are pooped out at the end of the day. The bakery has a great reputation for a reason. We will have more opportunities to meet up and as you know, Deb is moving onto the Island in 2020. Enjoy this festive, holiday season! Erica
